BMW New 118i

Which gives an idea of where BMW's new 1 Series stands in today's market. The big news is the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, which draws its genes from Mini (also owned by BMW). With a generous, flexible power band the 170bhp engine means BMW finally has a small-capacity turbocharged option to combat everyone from Audi to Volkswagen. Matched to the great engine is an eight (yes, count 'em) speed automatic transmission, which nets the 118i the prize for most number of gears in small cars. It's a great urban machine too, with the handling and ride striking a good balance between comfort and agility. No hot hatch this, since it rewards precise driving, but like on more expensive BMWs, a 'Sport +' mode will let you wag the 118i's tail a little. Enticing ambience is a result of sleek cabin design and little touches like the driver's instruments and iPod-modelled infotainment system really lift the proceedings.
